Eeyore, the sanctuary's only full sized donkey, has had several homes. When he was a couple years old he ended up moving to live with Caroline's grandma to protect her goat herd. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good fit and after a few years he made his way to Caroline's parents house. He was the only donkey and eventually was paired up with a mini horse for about 10 years. When his buddy passed away he was introduced to Lucy Belle. Donkeys need a companion so it was a relief he found a new friend.
Lucy Belle had been raised and trained to be a therapy donkey and to go into nursing homes. She was driven to Caroline's parents house inside a pickup truck (literally in the cab) and settled in with her bestie in early 2024. We can confirm she has forgotten all of her training and she will not be taking truck cab rides any time soon if we can help it.
After Caroline's mom passed in 2025, the plan was to move Eeyore and Lucy Belle to the sanctuary. Before she passed- Susan asked Caroline to take Lucy Belle because she knew that donkeys can live to be 40 and she would probably outlive her. Kurt decided it was best to relocate them both now so we made the move happen.
These 2 donkeys lived in a beautiful green pasture with hay and fresh water but are in for a change of scenery. Donkeys are desert animals and need dry sandy environments so we hope to make them feel at home here in NC and give them the attention and love they deserve.
